Pensacola and the surrounding area has a high density of air traffic. Of ten Class C airspace designations in the state of Florida, three lie within a 25 mile radius of Pensacola Regional Airport. These class C airspace designations are associated with Pensacola Regional Airport itself, with Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola to the southwest, and with NAS Whiting to the northeast. These class C airspaces actually overlap to form a 50 by 20 mile corridor running northeast and southwest from Pensacola Regional Airport. NAS Whiting is the site of the Navy's primary flight training; it is also the site of the all the Navy's helicopter training.

Fifteen miles to the east lies the westernmost of Eglin Air Force Base's restricted areas, R-2915A. Eglin's primary mission is weapon testing, so the restricted areas comprising the Eglin Test Range often contain live firings and/or drops.

To the north and west lies mostly class E airspace, but it is riddled with Military Operating Areas (MOA's) because of the heavy military training activities. There are many Navy Outlying Fields (NOLF's) in these areas, and there is often heavy traffic around these fields.
